The circular economy: from nice to have to must have

The transition to a circular economy is becoming increasingly urgent for a sustainable, healthy and safe living environment in the Netherlands. The VNG emphasises that the current efforts for the circular economy are insufficient to achieve the objectives for 2030 and 2050. In their position paper, which emerged from consultation rounds with municipal officials, they identify bottlenecks and make recommendations.

The recommendations focus on four crucial aspects (preconditions) on which the government can strengthen its role and which are prerequisites for accelerating the transition to a circular economy:

  1. Establish clear standards and legislation for a circular economy
  2. Establish a clear vision and governance structure with resources for the transition to a circular economy
  3. Organise national monitoring of the transition to the circular economy
  4. Coordinate the establishment and further development of knowledge platforms
